Day 1: Overnight Flight

You are on your way. Set out to discover Iceland’s adventurous landscapes and rich cultural heritage. From ethereal lava fields to thundering waterfalls to coastal villages, this tour reveals the island’s dramatic contrasts.

Day 2: Reykjavík, Iceland - Tour Begins

Your journey opens in Reykjavík. Step into Icelandic culture and explore the historic side of this capital city during a guided walking tour. As we make our way through the old section of the city, see the towering Hallgrimskirkja church, city hall, the harbor and Reykjavík’s oldest building, home of the Kraum Icelandic design center. Marvel at Reykjavík’s modern architecture, especially the Harpa concert hall and its famous glass façade. Tonight, get to know your fellow travelers during a delectable Icelandic dinner at a distinctive local restaurant.

Day 3: Reykjavík - Golden Circle - Reykjavík

Travel the Golden Circle. This spectacular route takes you to many of Iceland's most renowned natural wonders. Begin at Thingvellir National Park, where Icelanders gathered in A.D. 930 and established one of the world’s first parliaments. Here, at Thingvellir’s rift valley, stand at the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (UNESCO), the point where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. Next, lose yourself in the beauty of the Gullfoss (Golden Falls) waterfall, a stunning 100-foot double cascade. Stop at the famous thermal area of Geysir and see the fountain geyser known as Strokkur. Watch for its explosive vertical spout which can reach 90 feet. Then, visit the Friðheimar greenhouse cultivation center. Learn how the Icelanders grow delicious pesticide-free tomatoes and cucumbers with the aid of the island’s geothermal energy. Witness the Icelandic farm-to-table culinary culture. We have more in store as you discover the special breed of Icelandic horse during a brief show* and stable visit on a family-run farm.

Day 4: Reykjavík - Akureyri - Staðarbraut - Æðafossar - Húsavík

Experience the true beauty of the way up north. This morning we fly** to Akureyri. Upon arrival*** enjoy some leisure time to absorb the quaint culture of Iceland’s second largest city. En route to Húsavík, we’ll make a stop at Staðarbraut to see its fascinating collection of turf settlement homes. Continue to the Knútsstaðaborg Hollow; a rocky outcrop that Icelandic sheep can often be found upon. We will pause at Eider falls on the Laxá River, which claims the largest brown trout population on the island. Later, settle into your farmhouse in the Icelandic countryside. This family-owned property holds an environmental gold certification. Savor the reflective stillness of its dreamlike surroundings during a 3-night stay. This evening, enjoy the true essence of farm-to-table as locally sourced ingredients are incorporated in your dining experience.

Day 5: Húsavík

Take to the sea! This morning we venture into the town of Húsavík. Ancient tales say this was the first place in Iceland settled by the Norse. Your adventure starts with a visit to the town’s whaling museum. Next, gear up in thermal wear because you’ll be joining expert whale watchers on Skálfandi Bay. Aboard specialized zodiacs, get as close as you can to whales in northern Iceland. You may see the humpback, minke, orca, fin or even the giant blue whales that frequent these waters. This afternoon enjoy some leisure time and meet the people who call this town home.

Day 6: Húsavík - Lake Mývatn - Dettifoss - Asbyrgi Canyon - Húsavík

Spend today exploring the magnificent Diamond Circle, a scenic circuit that covers over 160 miles. Begin with a stop at one of Iceland's most historic waterfalls, Goðafoss, where Iceland was converted to Christianity in A.D. 1000. Next, marvel at Lake Mývatn, the Blue Lagoon of the north. Enjoy time exploring the warm, mineral-rich geothermal waters of this man-made lagoon. Continue on to the powerful Dettifoss waterfall, known to be one of the strongest waterfalls in all of Europe due to its volume. End the day at the horseshoe shaped Ásbyrgi Canyon. Hear the legend behind the canyon as you take in the view of this massive formation. This evening continue to experience the gifts of your surroundings during another farm-to-table inspired dinner.

Day 7: Húsavík - Snæfellsnes Peninsula - Stykkishólmur

Are you ready for a place unlike any other? Today you experience the otherworldliness of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula during a scenic drive to Stykkishólmur. This afternoon enjoy leisure time in the quaint fishing village to explore the picturesque scenery and charming shops and museums.

Day 8: Stykkishólmur - Vatneshillir Cave or Lava Field Walk

Today we continue our journey through the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Have your camera ready to capture the landscapes of black sand beaches, stunning cliffs, mountain peaks, volcanic craters, plunging waterfalls, rocky coastlines and tiny fishing villages. Board an Icelandic snow cat to ascend the captivating Snæfellsjökull glacier, said to be one of the world’s seven great energy centers. Climb to over 4,800 feet and enjoy breathtaking views as you explore the glacier on foot. Then, it’s your choice! Take a guided Vatnshellir Cave tour**** and head 100 feet below ground to an 8,000-year-old lava tube where you’ll experience total darkness and see amazing rock pigments, lava formations, stalagmites, stalactites and more. Or, perhaps you will choose to explore a coastal lava field featuring a myriad of natural textures and colors. Later, we gather for a stop in the quaint fishing town of Grundarfjörður for a glimpse of coastal living.

Day 9: Stykkishólmur - Borgarnes - Blue Lagoon - Reykjavík

Our voyage continues as we head south on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Embark on a true Icelandic cultural adventure as you spend time with a family that keeps alive a 400-year-old tradition of catching and preserving Greenland shark. See the fishing boat that was used by their grandfather; the tiny farmer’s church; and explore the museum to learn more about Iceland’s deep relationship with this trade. Before leaving, test your culinary courage and try hákarl (cured shark meat), a local specialty. Visit the Settlement Museum to dive into the origins of Icelandic heritage including the works of the famous Viking - and poet - Egill Skallagrímsson. Embark on a drive to the Reykjanes Peninsula, best known as the home of the Blue Lagoon. You can’t leave Iceland without taking a dip in the warm, mineral-rich waters of this geothermal wonder, located in the middle of a dramatic lava field. Spend the afternoon at leisure before coming together for an unforgettable farewell dinner at a restaurant featuring Icelandic-inspired cuisine.

Passport & Visa Information

Certain countries require a minimum of 6 months passport validity. You are strongly urged to contact the appropriate consulate for details.


We recommend that our clients travelling abroad take a photocopy of their passport and applicable visas. It should be packed separately from your actual passport and visa. We also recommend leaving a copy at home with your emergency contact.

Please Note

Single accommodations are limited and are available on a first come, first served basis.

Smaller buses, which may not be lavatory equipped, may be used on this program. In this case, frequent stops are made during travel periods.

Hotel check-in on your day of arrival is 3:00 p.m. Rooms may not be available prior to that time.

The days and order of sightseeing may change to best utilize your time on tour.

To complete your tour, we include roundtrip airport-to-hotel transfers when purchasing our airfare with your tour. If you have arranged for your own air, we are pleased to provide you the option of purchasing these transfers. Please note that all transfers will leave at pre-scheduled times.

Travel with just 24 passengers on this Explorations tour where a smaller group setting means a more personal travel experience.

On occasion, some activities may not be available due to inclement weather.

Due to tour scheduling, arrival flights should arrive prior to 10:00 a.m.

This tour includes moderate physical activity. The itinerary blends some longer days with shorter days and more leisure time. Walking tours, as well as walking slightly longer distances, up stairs or on uneven walking surfaces should be expected.

****The Vatnshellir Cave tour is not recommended for guests who are claustrophobic or have back or knee problems. Guests should be in good physical condition.
